Areas of Costa del Sol
MÁLAGA
Málaga, with its over 600,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the Costa del Sol. It has a long historical heritage that is visible in many parts of the city center. Málaga is one of Spain's most visited cities, especially due to its climate, with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year. Málaga has Spain's second-largest port and a new international airport, which is the country's third-largest. In 2019 alone, approximately 20 million travellers arrived via the airport, and there are over 100 daily flight arrivals with visitors coming to explore Málaga and the Costa del Sol. Some of the most visited places in the city include Picasso's home and museum, Calle Larios with its shops and tapas bars, the Moorish fortress Alcazaba, the impressive cathedral, and the new Pompidou Center on the waterfront. Málaga hosts a variety of events, such as the summer market or feria, the religious processions during the traditional Holy Week (Semana Santa), and the Spanish film festival, among others. Málaga also holds the title of the European city that offers the most cultural attractions per square meter.Lars Lomborg
TORREMOLINOS
Torremolinos was the first holiday destination on the Costa del Sol to begin seeing tourists in the 1950s. In those days, the rich and famous gathered around the swimming pools of luxury hotels scattered throughout La Carihuela, with its charming beach bars and chiringuitos. Today, Torremolinos has grown into a town with over 50,000 residents and offers plenty to enjoy. You can sunbathe on the 7 km long beach, have an affordable meal in the town center just off the main street, San Miguel, or enjoy delicious tapas or fried fish in La Carihuela or along the beaches of Bajondillo, Playamar, and Los Alamos. In the summer, Torremolinos is one of the hottest spots for young people looking to hit the many discos and nightclubs.
BENALMÁDENA
Benalmádena is geographically divided into Arroyo de la Miel (the town center), Benalmádena Costa (the coast), and Benalmádena Pueblo (the village). Benalmádena Costa is most famous for its Puerto Marina, a marina with over 1,000 berths and residential properties built on islands within the harbor. On either side of the marina, there is a total of 8 km of Blue Flag sandy beaches, with a beautiful promenade that leads to Torremolinos on one side and the five-star Torrequebrada Casino/Hotel on the other. There are also plenty of activities for families with children. You can visit the amusement park ‘Tivoli World’ or take the cable car to the top of the mountain, where you will have the most remarkable views of the coast. Other places you shouldn't miss include Sea Life and Paloma Park.

FUENGIROLA
Fuengirola is one of the largest tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol, with over 60,000 residents. This number nearly triples in July and August. Fuengirola is located just 25 km from the capital, Málaga, and serves as the final stop for tourists arriving by train, which connects all the towns between Málaga and Fuengirola. One of the liveliest places in Fuengirola is the old town center with the square ‘Plaza de Constitución,’ where you'll find plenty of shops as well as Spanish and international restaurants. From here, you can walk down to the beach and along the promenade to Fuengirola marina. When visiting Fuengirola, be sure to check out the street market, which is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Also, see if there is an event or concert taking place when you visit the old castle, ‘Castillo Sohail.’
MIJAS COSTA
Mijas Costa belongs to the municipality of Mijas, which is the largest municipality on the Costa del Sol. It stretches from the idyllic mountain village of Mijas Pueblo down to Calahonda, featuring 12 km of coastline. Mijas Costa is very popular among foreigners moving to the Costa del Sol. Mijas Pueblo, also known as "The White Village," is perched high on the mountainside with views over the coast and is the most well-known village in the area. Thousands of tourists visit the village each week to stroll through its historic centre or take a ride on the famous "donkey taxi." This is also the ideal place to buy your souvenirs. Mijas Costa offers many different activities, including 8 championship golf courses, various riding schools, several tennis clubs, and plenty of water sports facilities in the area known as La Cala de Mijas.
MARBELLA
Marbella is the hot spot and most famous city and area of the Costa del Sol and is the answer to the glamorous resort cities of Saint-Tropez in France and Miami in Florida. It is a preferred holiday destination for the rich and famous when they visit Spain. Over the past decades, Marbella has transformed from a fishing village into a cosmopolitan city. Currently, more than 135,000 people reside in Marbella. There is no better place on the Costa del Sol for gastronomy, parties, and vibrant colours than Marbella. The city centre boasts hundreds of world-class restaurants around the large square ‘Plaza Los Naranjos’ and the small streets nearby, along the beach, and of course in the luxury marina Puerto Banús. Marbella is also the ideal place for shopaholics! Whether you're looking to buy new clothes from designer stores or the department store El Corte Inglés, or if you're on the hunt for art or jewelry, Marbella is the place for you!
BENAHAVIS
Benahavis is the wealthiest municipality on the Costa del Sol and boasts having the best public school on the coast. The village itself is a picturesque, whitewashed mountain village overlooking the Guadalmina River. Along its narrow cobblestone streets, which remain as the old Moors laid them, are beautiful houses, shops, and an incredible selection of restaurants. Among locals, it is known as the ‘Rincón de la Gastronomía’ or the ‘gastronomic corner’ of the Costa del Sol. Benahavis is in many ways one of Andalusia's best-kept secrets. It is located just 7 km inland from the coastal road, right west of San Pedro de Alcántara and only a few minutes from Marbella and Puerto Banús. For golfers, Benahavis offers a vast array of golf courses within a short distance.
ESTEPONA
Estepona is the largest town west of Marbella. It stretches over 22 km of coastline and has around 60,000 residents. The 'New Golden Mile' is one of the most exclusive areas west of Estepona, featuring luxury properties on both sides of the motorway and several five-star hotels, such as the Ritz Carlton and Kempinski.
